Fred talks about Obama taking his time to make a decission on the Wasr in Afghanistan.
I’m of two minds on these remarks. I’ve heard a number of comparisons to Sen Reid’s remarks earlier. I don’t think Reid’s remarks are comparable. Sen Reid directly claimed that the primary strategy, the surge, had failed, whereas Sen Thompson has argued that the President has a successful strategy available, but isn’t interested in putting his weight behind it, or lacks the ability to do so.
If he had only said that the President won’t win because he doesn’t want to, that would be an extremely severe criticism, but it would be legitimate. It’s essentially demanding the Commander in Chief do his job.
But to say he’s incompetent is another matter entirely. From a practical standpoint, no one can ever really be competent to perform the most demanding job the nation has to offer. We fight, as a nation, with the military we have, not the military we want. We may know that the human being who resides in that office has shortcomings, but there’s nothing to be gained in broadcasting that fact to our enemies.
